In a unique and symbolic gesture amid the ongoing fuel shortage in Odisha, three judges of the Orissa High Court rode bicycles to the court premises in Cuttack to promote awareness about fuel conservation and responsible energy use on Monday.

Justice Savitri Ratho, Justice V. Narasingh, and Justice Sibo Sankar Mishra cycled from near the Judicial Academy to the High Court, sending a strong message on the importance of conserving petrol and diesel during the state-wide fuel shortage. By opting for bicycles instead of official vehicles, the judges aimed to encourage citizens to minimise unnecessary fuel consumption.

The initiative drew attention and appreciation from lawyers, court staff, and local residents, who lauded the judges for setting a practical example. Observers noted that the bicycle ride also underscored the need to explore environmentally friendly and sustainable transport alternatives, especially during times of crisis.

Officials and social commentators suggested that such initiatives by constitutional authorities can inspire citizens to adopt more responsible habits regarding fuel use and sustainable living. The judges’ efforts have already sparked discussions on social media, with many users praising the symbolic campaign as a thoughtful and timely step amid ongoing fuel challenges.

While the judges did not provide any comments, the incident has highlighted how public figures can influence civic awareness through simple yet impactful actions. As Odisha continues to grapple with fuel-related issues, this bicycle ride stands out as an example of civic responsibility and environmental consciousness.

Worth mentioning, amid growing concerns over petrol and diesel availability in Odisha, electric vehicle (EV) showrooms are witnessing an unexpected surge in footfall and bookings as consumers increasingly turn towards battery-powered mobility solutions.

With long queues continuing at petrol pumps across several districts, many commuters are now viewing electric scooters as a practical alternative to conventional fuel-based vehicles.

The sudden shift in consumer behaviour has reignited discussions around EV infrastructure, charging facilities, and the State government’s role in accelerating the adoption of sustainable transportation in Odisha.
