Bhadrak district jail witnessed a unique celebration on Saturday as female inmates observed the sacred Savitri festival with full devotion. Within the jail premises, the women gathered at the Maa temple and conducted rituals independently, performing prayers and ceremonies in their own traditional way. 

The atmosphere, usually marked by discipline and routine, was infused with devotion, chants, and vibrant celebrations that brought a moment of spiritual relief to the prisoners.

Support from Jail Authorities Enhances Festivities

The jail authorities extended all necessary facilities to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival. Offerings, puja items, and other essential materials were provided to the inmates. A similar initiative was undertaken for the wives of male prisoners, allowing them to participate in religious activities within the jail. 

This support not only allowed the inmates to observe the festival with dignity but also reinforced the humane approach of the correctional facility.

“I feel a mix of sadness and joy. I am happy to have worshipped my husband inside the jail premises. I extend my gratitude to the jail authorities for arranging Puja items and all,” said Puspalata Jena, prisoner’s wife celebrating Savitri.

“On occasions like Savitri and Raksha Bandhan, we arrange facilities for women from a humanitarian perspective. Today, as Savitri is being celebrated, wives of male inmates were allowed to meet their husbands. Similarly, if a wife is in jail, we permit husbands to visit them,” said Prakash Sethi, Jailer.

The celebration became a symbol of faith and resilience, showcasing that even within the constraints of prison life, cultural and religious traditions continue to thrive. 

The female inmates expressed gratitude for the arrangements and described the festival as a heartening experience, reminding everyone that devotion knows no boundaries, even behind bars.
