Lost both legs due to negligence of electricity dept, Odisha youth gets Rs 50L after six-year legal battle

After a prolonged six-year wait and relentless legal struggle, justice has finally been delivered to Piyush Patra of Gumuda village in Rayagada district of Odisha. In a landmark judgment, the Gunupur Sub-Judge Court ordered the electricity department to pay compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the devastating injuries Piyush suffered due to alleged negligence by the department in 2018.
According to reports, Piyush’s life changed tragically in 2018 when an incident linked to severe negligence on the part of the electricity department resulted in him losing both his legs. The accident left him and his family devastated, forcing them into years of emotional, physical, and financial hardship.
Following the incident, Piyush and his family undertook a long legal battle in pursuit of justice. After years of struggle and court proceedings, the family approached the court seeking accountability and compensation for the immense suffering and life-altering consequences faced by Piyush.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the Court delivered what is being viewed as a historic verdict. The court held the electricity department responsible for the incident and directed authorities to provide total compensation of Rs 50 lakh to Piyush within the next 60 days.

As part of the compensation structure, the court has ordered that Rs 25 lakh be deposited in a fixed deposit account in Piyush’s name to secure his future and ensure long-term financial stability. The remaining Rs 25 lakh will be released to support his ongoing medical treatment and to ease the economic burden on his family.
The judgment has brought a sense of relief and hope to the family, ending years of uncertainty and legal struggle. The verdict is also being seen as a significant step toward ensuring accountability and justice in cases involving negligence by public service departments.
“I had confidence in the judiciary that I would get justice. I am happy that I have finally received justice. I convey my sincere thanks to the judiciary,” said Piyush Patra.
