In a major crackdown, Berhampur police successfully busted an illegal IPL betting operation in the city on Sunday. Acting on information received through two mobile applications, police arrested a suspect involved in the betting network. During the raid, police recovered Rs 60,000 in cash, a car, and two high-end mobile phones reportedly used to facilitate the betting transactions.

The operation underscores the growing role of technology in enabling illegal gambling, as well as the proactive measures taken by law enforcement to act on digital tip-offs.

Measures to Curb Illegal Gambling

With the IPL season in full swing, Berhampur police have stepped up surveillance to prevent gambling activities from escalating. The arrested suspect remains under investigation, and authorities are working to identify and apprehend other members of the betting network.

In a similar incident unfolding on April 29, 2026, Puri police uncovered an IPL betting racket operating in the district. Four individuals, including the main accused Prasanna Prusty along with other identified as Nageshwar Rao, Bishwanath Lenka, and Ramakant Sahu were arrested in connection with the illegal betting activities. 

Officials emphasized that the crackdown sends a clear message: illegal gambling will not be tolerated. IPL betting not only violates the law but also promotes unethical practices. Police have assured that all such operations will continue to be monitored and targeted rigorously throughout the season.
