Fuel crisis pushes Odisha consumers towards EVs as dealers witness bookings doubling

Amid growing concerns over petrol and diesel availability in Odisha, electric vehicle (EV) showrooms are witnessing an unexpected surge in footfall and bookings as consumers increasingly turn towards battery-powered mobility solutions, sources said on Friday.

With long queues continuing at petrol pumps across several districts, many commuters are now viewing electric scooters as a practical alternative to conventional fuel-based vehicles. Reports from Bhubaneswar indicate that EV showrooms, particularly in the Khandagiri area, are witnessing crowds similar to those seen at fuel stations.
Consumers arriving at EV dealerships said the ongoing fuel uncertainty, limited supply, and rising petrol prices have forced them to reconsider their transportation choices. Many buyers expressed frustration over spending hours in queues at petrol pumps only to receive fuel worth a limited amount.
Managers at EV centres stated that bookings have increased sharply over the last two days. According to dealership officials, the number of bookings has more than doubled compared to normal business trends.
Dealers also claimed that sales targets usually achieved over an entire month are now being reached within a day due to the sudden spike in demand.
Customers purchasing EV scooters said they were attracted by the convenience of home charging and freedom from dependence on petrol pumps. Several buyers also raised concerns over fluctuating fuel prices and declining mileage in petrol vehicles.
Consumers noted that while EVs may still face infrastructure and charging challenges, they offer a dependable alternative during periods of fuel uncertainty. Many believe electric mobility can reduce dependence on petrol and provide long-term savings.
The sudden shift in consumer behaviour has reignited discussions around EV infrastructure, charging facilities, and the State government’s role in accelerating the adoption of sustainable transportation in Odisha.
“If we look at the target, what used to be sold in a month, today we see that the monthly target is filled up in perhaps a single day. There’s no compulsion for people. People know that now everything is on social media, and people are seeing everything. They are still coming and taking it, meaning they are coming to take it because that much is already lined up,” the manager of an EV centre in Khandagiri said.
