Arshdeep Singh faces backlash over banter with Tilak Varma on social media

Punjab Kings (PBKS) fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has found himself in the spotlight again after a video involving Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Tilak Varma went viral on Thursday. Known for his unfiltered online persona, Arshdeep shared the clip on Snapchat, where he appeared to refer to Tilak as ‘andhere,’ meaning dark in English.
In the video, Tilak initially ignored the comment, but Arshdeep continued the banter, jokingly advising him to use sunscreen. He also pointed to Tilak’s teammate Naman Dhir, calling him the real noor, or light, from Punjab. Tilak responded lightly, saying he already applies sunscreen.
Social Media Users Question Boundaries
While many perceived the interaction as playful banter, a section of social media users criticised Arshdeep for alleged racist undertones. Comments ranged from questioning the acceptability of such behaviour to highlighting how humour in cricket circles can sometimes cross sensitive lines.

Players and Social Media Conduct
The incident comes amid heightened attention on cricketers’ social media conduct. Earlier this season, the BCCI reportedly issued guidelines covering online behaviour, guest interactions, hotel access, smoking and vaping, and compliance with anti-corruption protocols. Punjab Kings are also expected to meet with players to ensure adherence to these protocols.

Arshdeep has a significant online presence, posting reels and behind-the-scenes content to over six million Instagram followers, which often showcases his humorous and candid personality.
Banter or Oversight?
The viral clip underscores the fine line between humour and insensitivity in the public eye. As cricketing personalities engage with millions online, incidents like these highlight the need for careful social media responsibility, especially when interactions are visible to fans worldwide.
