Dreaded criminal injured in police encounter in Sambalpur

A dreaded criminal was injured in a police encounter in Odisha’s Sambalpur late on Saturday night after allegedly opening fire at police personnel during a vehicle checking operation in Burla. 

The injured accused has been identified as Manish Sahu, who is facing more than 14 criminal cases related to dacoity, robbery, illegal arms possession and Corex smuggling.

According to police sources, Burla police were conducting vehicle checking near Planetarium Chhak around midnight when they noticed a Swift car approaching from the side of Sambalpur University. Police signalled the vehicle to stop, but the driver allegedly tried to flee from the spot. Following a chase, the vehicle was intercepted near Fishery Chhak.

Police said one of the accused got down from the car and allegedly fired three rounds at the police team. In response, police personnel resorted to controlled firing in self-defence and fired two rounds. During the exchange of fire, Manish Sahu sustained a bullet injury on his right leg.

He was immediately shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research for treatment. Three other persons travelling in the car were also detained by police for questioning.

Police seized a pistol, live ammunition, bottles of Corex cough syrup and the vehicle used in the incident from the spot. A case has been registered under various sections, including the NDPS Act, Arms Act and other relevant provisions. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
