Following the declaration of the CBSE Class 12 results on May 13, a wave of anxiety has swept through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2026 aspirants across India. Official data reveals a dip in performance, with the overall pass percentage standing at 85.20 per cent, marking a decrease of 3.19 per cent from the previous year. 

Furthermore, only 94,028 candidates, representing 5.32 per cent of the total cohort, managed to score 90 per cent and above. This downturn has left many high-achieving engineering candidates with board scores below the mandatory thresholds required for premier technical institutes.

75 Per Cent Admission Rule

According to the official JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility criteria, securing a qualifying rank in the entrance test does not guarantee admission on its own. To secure a seat at an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), general category candidates must satisfy specific board exam benchmarks:

General Category Requirements: Candidates must either secure at least 75 per cent marks in their Class 12 board or equivalent examination, or fall within the top 20 percentile of their respective boards.

Reserved Category Relaxation: For SC and ST candidates, the minimum board examination requirement is relaxed to 65 per cent.

This stringent criteria is binding and is also prescribed by several National Institutes of Technology (NITs) for general category admissions. Consequently, numerous students have taken to social media to report lower-than-expected scores, compounding fears ahead of the JEE Advanced exam scheduled for May 17.

Available Options For Affected Candidates

For anxious students who have fallen short of the 75 per cent threshold, several immediate and long-term academic pathways remain open to navigate the hurdle:

Board Redressal: Candidates can utilise the official re-evaluation facilities provided by the CBSE to challenge their initial grades.

Supplementary Exams: Students have the option to sit for the CBSE Class 12 supplementary examinations scheduled to take place on July 15.

Alternative Enrolment: Aspirants may enrol themselves with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to improve their scores.
