Bengaluru Software Engineer quits his high-paying job to become ‘dog father’

Not far from Bengaluru, on a sprawling farm filled with barking, tail-wagging dogs, lives Rakesh Shukla, known across India as the “Dog Father.” Once a software engineer and entrepreneur, Shukla’s life took a radical turn in 2009 when he brought home a 45-day-old Golden Retriever named Kavya.

The puppy, scared and hiding in a corner, inspired an emotional awakening in him, transforming his sense of purpose. Soon after, he rescued another stray dog, Lucky, during heavy rains. What began as care for a few dogs quickly escalated into a life devoted to hundreds of abandoned, injured, and unwanted animals.

Building a Sanctuary for Every Dog

By 2012, Shukla purchased land in Doddaballapur and established a permanent sanctuary designed entirely for the needs of the dogs. His farm houses Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Great Danes, Saint Bernards, and hundreds of mixed-breed strays. Some are sick, disabled, or elderly, requiring constant medical attention, including daily drips and special care.

Visitors are greeted by a chaotic, affectionate scene as dogs rush to him, barking, jumping, and licking him like family. The sanctuary employs around ten staff members and feeds approximately 200 kilograms each of chicken and rice daily, with running costs personally funded by Shukla.

Over time, the rescue centre became associated with VOSD, Voice of Stray Dogs gaining national recognition in the animal welfare community. Despite challenges, including opposition from some locals, Shukla’s dedication continues undeterred.

Rakesh Shukla’s journey from corporate success to full-time canine care is a story of compassion and purpose. His sanctuary stands as a testament to what one person’s commitment can achieve, rescuing hundreds of dogs and giving them a life filled with love, care, and dignity.
