Ayushmann Khurrana says no more taboo topics, wants only family audience films now!

For over a decade, Ayushmann Khurrana carved a unique space in Bollywood by backing stories many mainstream stars once avoided. Whether it was sperm donation in Vicky Donor, erectile dysfunction in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, LGBTQ+ relationships in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, or transgender acceptance in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, the actor consistently brought taboo conversations into commercial cinema — and audiences responded strongly at the box office.
But now, the actor appears ready for a shift.

‘I Think I’ve Finished All the Taboo Topics’
During an exclusive interaction with Sonal Kalra on The Right Angle, Ayushmann was asked which taboo subject he would like to explore next on screen. His response hinted at a major change in his creative direction.
“I think maine saare taboo topics khatam kar diye hain (laughs) I have worked in so many films based on them. It limits the family audience. I did films on taboo subjects before the Covid pandemic. Even after that, I did Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui and Doctor G, which didn’t get as much at the box office as I hoped for,” said the Dream Girl actor.
The actor acknowledged that audience behaviour has evolved significantly since the pandemic era, especially with the rise of OTT platforms and changing viewing patterns.
Why Ayushmann Is Now Looking for ‘Relatable’ Cinema?
Despite the underwhelming theatrical response to some of his recent socially driven films, Ayushmann clarified that he does not regret taking bold storytelling risks. However, he now wants to focus on subjects that can attract wider family audiences.
“After OTT became big, I only looked for films which were for wider audiences. Taboo break se zyaada relatable subjects which people can watch together. Everything was so different before the pandemic, the films I did had tremendous box office uproar. But things changed post pandemic,” said the Thamma actor.
The statement reflects a growing trend in Bollywood, where filmmakers are increasingly leaning toward broader entertainers after the pandemic reshaped theatre-going habits.
What’s Next for the Actor?
Following his latest release Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, which opened to an average first day at the box office, Ayushmann already has two upcoming projects lined up — Yeh Prem Mol Liya and Udta Teer.
While the actor may be moving away from taboo-heavy narratives for now, his filmography has already left a lasting mark on socially conscious mainstream cinema.
