Inflation fears mount as fuel and essential prices keep climbing

Continued rise in prices of essential commodities and fuel since May 14 has increased financial pressure on common people across the country, with inflationary trends beginning to impact daily household expenses and transportation costs.

Prices of several commonly used items, including milk, petrol, diesel and CNG, have witnessed an increase in recent days. Gold and silver prices have also risen, adding to the broader impact of inflation across sectors.

With transportation becoming costlier, the effects of the price rise are gradually being felt in routine expenditure and everyday living costs.

Impact Visible Across Sectors

Experts said the recent inflationary trend has largely been driven by an increase in wholesale prices, particularly in imported commodities and fuel-linked products.

Economist Asit Mohanty said the rise in wholesale prices had affected the cost structure of several sectors dependent on imported raw materials.

“The inflationary trend has mainly been witnessed at the wholesale price level. Retail price calculations have not yet been fully estimated. The increase has largely been seen in imported goods such as crude oil. Once crude oil prices rise, supply costs also increase,” he said.

Imported Raw Materials Push Costs Higher

Mohanty further stated that the rise in prices of industrial raw materials had also contributed to higher input costs in different sectors.

“The price of polypropylene has also increased. This material is widely used in packaging, and the rise in its price has increased input costs,” he added.

The continued increase in prices of fuel and essential commodities is expected to have a wider impact on transportation, packaging and other consumer-related sectors in the coming days.
