A youth, who was brutally attacked with a curved dagger over an alleged past enmity in Balasore district, Odisha, succumbed to injuries during treatment on Thursday morning, triggering tension in the locality.

The deceased has been identified as Sanjit Mallik of Junabalada village under Basta police limits.

According to police and local sources, the incident took place on Wednesday evening near Junabalada village when Sanjit was allegedly intercepted and attacked by two youths armed with a sharp-edged weapon. He sustained deep injuries on his abdomen and several other parts of his body during the assault.

The attack reportedly created panic in the area as locals rushed to the spot after hearing about the incident.

Critically injured youth rushed to hospital

Locals immediately rescued the critically injured Sanjit and shifted him to Balasore hospital for treatment. Doctors had been treating him in a critical condition since Wednesday night.

However, despite medical efforts, the youth succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on Thursday.

Police suspect previous rivalry to be the prime reason behind the fatal attack, though the exact motive is yet to be officially confirmed.

One accused caught by locals, three detained

Following the attack, angry locals chased the accused persons and managed to overpower one of them before handing him over to police.

Basta police have meanwhile detained three persons in connection with the incident and started questioning them as part of the investigation.

The youth’s death triggered tension in the locality, with villagers demanding strict and immediate action against all those involved in the murder.

Police personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward situation. Further investigation into the case is underway.
