Odisha bakes as heatwave, humidity make life unbearable amid rising temperatures

Relentless heatwave conditions continued to grip Odisha on Friday, leaving people across the state reeling under intense heat and oppressive humidity. From western Odisha to the coastal belt, residents struggled to cope with the scorching weather and unbearable sultriness.
Sambalpur emerged as the hottest place in the state with the temperature crossing 41 degrees Celsius by 11.30 am. The city recorded 41.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Jharsuguda at 40.6 degrees and Hirakud at 39.6 degrees Celsius. In Bhubaneswar, the temperature stood at 35 degrees Celsius, while humidity levels touched 68 per cent, making outdoor conditions highly uncomfortable.
More than the soaring temperature, it was the excessive humidity that added to public discomfort, especially in the coastal districts. According to Heat Index data shared by meteorologists, Gopalpur recorded the highest humidity level at 84 per cent by 11.30 am on Friday. Balasore followed with 76 per cent humidity, while Paradip and Puri recorded 75 per cent each.
Weather experts said high humidity significantly increases the ‘feels like’ temperature, worsening heat stress and making conditions more dangerous for vulnerable groups. They warned that when the Heat Index remains between 52 and 92, the risk of heat stroke rises sharply.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours as the heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the next few days.
