For Rahul Mallick, a young para athlete from Odisha’s Balasore district, life did not come to a standstill after a tragic accident. Instead, he transformed adversity into determination and is now steadily moving towards the global stage through his remarkable journey in para fencing.

Rahul, a resident of Baulagadia village under Kandagaradi Panchayat in the district, has been selected to participate in an upcoming international para fencing competition in Turkey scheduled for June 24. However, financial hardship now threatens to stand in the way of his dream.

Equipped with a protective helmet, fencing jacket, and sword, Rahul competes from a wheelchair in para fencing – a sport that demands exceptional skill, courage, and perseverance. Through consistent performances and dedication, he has earned an opportunity to represent himself on the international stage.

Born into a modest family, Rahul’s life story is one of struggle and resilience. The medals he has won over the years stand as a testament to his talent and relentless efforts.

Three years ago, Rahul’s life took a devastating turn when a serious accident left him nearly 60 per cent physically disabled. The incident pushed him and his family into despair. However, during his treatment, Rahul discovered para fencing – a turning point that gave his life a new direction.

Determined to rebuild his future, Rahul underwent rigorous training under his coach and worked tirelessly despite physical pain, financial difficulties, and social challenges. His persistence eventually paid off when he delivered an impressive performance at the Under-23 Para Fencing Championship held in Rajasthan, securing his place in the upcoming international competition.

Yet, his biggest challenge remains funding his journey. Rahul’s father works as a daily wage labourer, and the family is struggling financially. While passport formalities were completed with support from friends and relatives, arranging money for the entry fees and flight tickets has become a major hurdle.

Locals believe that with timely support from the government or organisations, Rahul can travel to Turkey and bring pride to Odisha and the country through his achievements.

After learning about Rahul’s talent and circumstances, Nilgiri MLA visited him and extended financial assistance. The legislator also connected Rahul with the Sports Minister through a video call, during which the minister reportedly assured all possible support.

Meanwhile, the village sarpanch Rajendra Raut has appealed to kind-hearted individuals and organisations to come forward and help Rahul fulfil his dream of competing on the world stage.
