Repeated Kalbaisakhi storms leave Rourkela in darkness, residents struggle amid power outage

The impact of the recent Kalbaisakhi storms continue to disrupt normal life in Rourkela, Odisha where several areas of the steel city are still struggling with prolonged power cuts, damaged infrastructure and blocked roads days after the first spell of rain and storm.

The Kalbaisakhi rain that hit the city on May 25 had caused widespread damage in many parts of Rourkela. Even after several days, electricity supply has not been fully restored in multiple localities, leaving residents frustrated and anxious.

The situation worsened further after another spell of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed the city again on Friday evening, increasing the hardship for people already affected by the earlier storm.

Several sectors continue to remain affected

Residents of Sector-1, Sector-2, Sector-3, Sector-20 and many other areas are continuing to face major inconvenience as power supply remains disrupted in several pockets.

In many places, electric poles and wires damaged during the storm are yet to be fully repaired. Residents said repeated rain over the last few days has slowed down restoration work and created fresh problems in some localities.

Apart from electricity disruption, several households are also facing water supply issues and communication problems due to the prolonged outages.

People said daily life has been badly affected as many families have been forced to spend nights in darkness amid humid weather conditions.

Storm damage visible across city

A visit to different parts of the city shows extensive damage caused by the repeated Kalbaisakhi storms.

Large trees uprooted by strong winds are still seen lying beside roads and residential areas in several places. In some areas, roads remain partially blocked due to fallen branches and debris.

Several houses have also reportedly suffered roof damage due to the intense wind and rain. Residents said the continuous spell of stormy weather has created fear among many families, especially in areas where damaged trees and hanging electric wires still pose a threat.

Locals said the condition in some parts of the city no longer resembles the usual picture of Rourkela as storm damage continues to be visible across several neighbourhoods.

Residents seek faster restoration work

Teams from the electricity department and civic administration are carrying out restoration and clearing operations in different affected areas.

However, many residents have expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in restoring normal power supply and clearing damaged trees from roads and residential pockets.
