A case of temple theft was reported from Odisha’s Cuttack district, where miscreants targeted the ancient Budhakeshwar Temple in the Niali area late on Tuesday night.

The temple, located on the banks of the Prachi River, was broken into by unidentified persons who managed to escape after carrying out the theft. The incident has triggered anger among devotees and local residents, who are demanding strict action against those involved.

Theft Inside Temple Complex

According to reports, the miscreants broke open the locks of the temple’s storeroom, the priest’s room, and the adjoining Hanuman temple. They allegedly stole utensils and cash worth around Rs 1.5 lakh. The theft came to light later, creating tension among devotees and temple authorities.

Members of the Trust Board along with devotees have urged the police to identify and arrest the culprits at the earliest. Police have reached the spot and initiated an investigation into the matter.

Chandan Kumar Dash, temple servitor said, “I return from the temple every night after completing all the rituals. However, when I arrived this morning around 6 a.m., I found that the locks of my room, the store room, and the Hanuman temple were broken. I immediately informed the villagers and the board members about the incident.”

Fakir Charan Jena, Temple trustee said, “This is an unfortunate incident. Thousands of people gather every day for prayers and such an incident has taken place.”

Rising Concerns Over Temple Security

The incident has revived concerns over repeated temple theft cases in the state. Around a year ago, a series of similar thefts were reported from the Balipatna police station area in Khordha district. Police had then arrested the main accused and busted a racket involved in such crimes.

With miscreants reportedly becoming active again, locals are calling for stronger security measures at vulnerable temples to prevent further incidents.
