Suryakumar Yadav’s India T20 captaincy under scanner amid succession buzz

Questions over Suryakumar Yadav’s future as India’s T20I captain are growing, with reports in some sections of media suggesting that head coach Gautam Gambhir could play a key role in determining his fate. According to a senior BCCI source, the selection committee is reportedly uncertain about Suryakumar’s place in the side based solely on his batting performances.
The selectors had initially hoped the IPL would help him rediscover his best form, similar to his previous campaign where he scored more than 700 runs. However, concerns remain over his struggles this season, particularly against pace bowling. The source claimed that even inexperienced pacers have troubled him with straightforward hard-length deliveries, raising doubts about his long-term role in the setup.
Another factor reportedly influencing the discussions is India’s long-term planning, particularly with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in mind. According to the source, selectors currently do not view Suryakumar as part of those future plans.
As uncertainty surrounds his position, several names are emerging as potential candidates for leadership. Shreyas Iyer is considered a strong option due to his tactical understanding and leadership qualities, though there are questions over how smoothly he and Gambhir would work together. Insiders also recall Iyer’s disappointment after Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2024 title win was largely credited to Gambhir’s mentorship.

Shubman Gill has also re-entered discussions after another successful IPL season while leading Gujarat Titans impressively. He was previously seen as a long-term captaincy option before a dip in form interrupted those plans. A return to India’s T20 side could put him back in the leadership conversation.
For now, Indian cricket finds itself balancing current performance, future ambitions and internal decision-making. Suryakumar’s future may ultimately depend on whether Gambhir continues to back him for one more opportunity.
