West Bengal govt announces Rs 5 ‘Maach Bhaat’ across 400 canteens

In a move likely to resonate strongly with Bengal’s cultural identity, the West Bengal government, on Tuesday, announced that fish-and-rice meals, popularly known as ‘Maach Bhaat’, will soon be available for just Rs 5 at 400 state-run canteens across the state.
The announcement comes amid continued political debate over food choices and Bengali dietary traditions.
Speaking at an administrative meeting in Kalyani, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the subsidised meal scheme would be introduced across dedicated government canteens in West Bengal.
Food Politics Takes Centre Stage
The issue of food habits became a major talking point during the recently concluded Assembly election campaign. Leaders of the All India Trinamool Congress had alleged that the BJP would ban fish, meat and eggs if it came to power in Bengal, triggering sharp political exchanges.
At a public rally in April, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee strongly defended Bengal’s food culture, saying fish and rice are central to the state’s identity. The BJP, however, rejected the allegations and maintained that no such restrictions existed in BJP-ruled states.
Several BJP leaders, including Anurag Thakur, also participated in fish-and-rice feasts during campaign events to underline their connection with Bengali culture.
Expansion Of Subsidised Meal Scheme
Affordable meal schemes have long been popular in West Bengal. The ‘Maa’ canteens, launched in 2021, currently serve low-cost meals including rice, dal, vegetables and egg curry.
With the addition of fish-and-rice meals, the latest expansion appears aimed at strengthening affordable food access while also addressing concerns linked to Bengal’s cultural food identity.
