Akshaye Khanna’s Chhaava triumph came after Randeep Hooda refused Aurangzeb over ‘So much Hindu-Muslim…’ chaos!

There was a time when Akshaye Khanna quietly disappeared from mainstream conversations. But with one haunting performance in Chhaava, the actor stormed back into the spotlight and reminded audiences why he remains one of Hindi cinema’s finest performers. His portrayal of Aurangzeb — restrained, cruel and psychologically intimidating — became one of the most discussed elements of the film.
Even after the buzz around Dhurandhar took over social media, fans continued praising the sheer menace Akshaye brought to the historical drama.

But before Akshaye slipped into Aurangzeb’s robes, the role had actually gone to another actor first.
And that actor was Randeep Hooda.
Why Randeep Hooda Refused Chhaava
In a recent interaction with Zoom, Randeep revealed that he was initially approached to play Aurangzeb in director Laxman Utekar’s ambitious period epic. However, the timing could not have been worse for him.
The actor was already deeply invested in Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, for which he had undergone a dramatic physical transformation. Randeep admitted he did not think he could physically fit the part of Aurangzeb after changing himself so drastically for Savarkar.
At the same time, another storm was unfolding in his personal and professional life. The actor was caught in a bitter intellectual property dispute surrounding Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, and the political discourse around the film had already become emotionally exhausting for him.
Opening up about his decision, Randeep said, “I was going through an IP court case and I had so much Hindu-Muslim thing going on in the whole narrative and I just did not want to go down that street.”
The Court Battle That Changed Everything
The legal fight around Swatantrya Veer Savarkar became one of the major talking points during the film’s release phase. Randeep had reportedly sought complete ownership of the movie’s intellectual property rights, a demand strongly contested by producers Sandeep Singh and Anand Pandit.

After tensions escalated, both sides eventually reached a settlement. The producers retained 51 percent ownership, while Randeep received 49 percent rights. Beyond the legal battle, the film also triggered intense ideological debates because it revolved around freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and his philosophy of assertive Hindu nationalism, often viewed in sharp contrast to Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology of non-violence and secular politics.
Akshaye Khanna’s Scene-Stealing Comeback
Although Randeep exited the project, the casting eventually turned into a massive win for Chhaava. Led by Vicky Kaushal, the film emerged as one of 2025’s biggest blockbusters and reportedly collected ₹808 crore worldwide.
Alongside Vicky, the film featured Rashmika Mandanna, Vineet Kumar Singh, Ashutosh Rana and Divya Dutta in important roles. Yet it was Akshaye Khanna’s sinister screen presence that left audiences stunned. Without relying on loud dialogues or exaggerated theatrics, the actor transformed Aurangzeb into a cold-blooded force that lingered long after the film ended.
For many viewers, Chhaava did not just mark another successful film — it marked Akshaye Khanna’s grand resurgence.
Randeep Hooda’s New Phase
Despite missing out on Chhaava, Randeep’s career continues to move forward on an interesting path. He was recently seen in Inspector Avinash Season 2, directed by Neeraj Pathak, which premiered on JioHotstar on May 15.

The actor will next headline a biographical drama inspired by the life of legendary Marathi Tamasha and Lavani artiste Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar. The film also stars Shraddha Kapoor.
Meanwhile, his personal life has entered a happier chapter. Randeep and wife Lin Laishram recently welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Nyomica Hooda.
