Local Man Arrested After Outrage in Budgam After ‘Rape’ and Murder of 12-Year-Old

A small Kashmir village was shaken after the brutal rape and subsequent killing of a 12-year-old girl, sparking widespread anger and calls for swift justice.

Police say a local youth has been arrested as investigators work to piece together the motive and sequence of events.

Investigation and Arrest

As per sources, the girl went missing on May 23 and her body was later recovered several meters from home on May 24. Evidence at the scene included a copy of the Quran and the victim’s shoes.

Budgam Police say investigators completed initial medico-legal and forensic procedures and questioned multiple suspects over 36 hours before detaining a local resident.

Authorities identified the accused as Mudasir Ahmad Mir, arrested on May 26, and stated the probe so far indicates no other individual was involved.

Police Statement

Senior Superintendent of Police K.K. Hari Prasad told reporters that extensive evidence was collected and numerous people were interrogated. He said one suspect ultimately confessed, while the motive and exact sequence of events remain under inquiry. The SSP appealed for public calm and urged citizens to trust the ongoing investigation.

Public Reaction and Political Response

The crime provoked strong reactions from regional leaders and civil society. National Conference leaders and a prominent Shia cleric demanded a swift, transparent, time-bound probe to reveal the truth and ensure accountability.

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the murder as “shocking and deeply distressing” and called for reflection on societal safety for children, pledging government support for a thorough investigation.

As forensics and questioning continue, the community awaits answers and seeks reassurance that justice will be delivered swiftly and transparently.
