Amid this alarming trend, another horrifying incident has surfaced from Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district, where a woman allegedly set her sleeping boyfriend on fire after reportedly “finding a better option” and wanting him out of her life.

The case was widely reported after police arrested the accused following an eight-day manhunt.
Slept Beside Him, Then Allegedly Set Him on Fire
According to police officials, the accused woman, identified as Kanti, had earlier left her husband and children and was living with her boyfriend Ramchandra in Basti district. Investigators say the relationship eventually turned bitter.
In a chilling turn of events, Kanti allegedly poured inflammable material on Ramchandra while he was asleep and set him ablaze before fleeing the scene.
Police said she locked the room from outside after the attack in an apparent attempt to ensure he could not escape.
Despite suffering severe burn injuries, Ramchandra reportedly managed to break free by escaping through a window. He was rushed for treatment and later referred to Gorakhpur due to the seriousness of his condition. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
“Wanted Him Out of the Way”: Police
Police arrested Kanti eight days after the incident from Munderwa railway station in Basti. According to Circle Officer (City) Satyendra Bhushan Tripathi, the accused allegedly confessed during questioning and told investigators that she had “found a better option” than Ramchandra and therefore wanted to eliminate him from her path.

The victim’s mother alleged that Kanti frequently harassed and threatened her son during their relationship. She claimed there had been repeated disputes between the two and accused the woman of mentally torturing Ramchandra before the fatal attack.
Police are continuing further investigation into the case, including details about the couple’s past relationship and the sequence of events leading to the murder.
