Odisha weather alert: Heatwave and thunderstorm warnings for coming week

Odisha is set to experience fluctuating weather conditions over the next week, with a mix of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and heatwave conditions affecting various districts. 

On Day 1 (until 0830 IST, 25 May 2026), light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are very likely at one or two places in the state. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph may occur in the afternoon and evening. Heatwave conditions are also forecast at isolated places in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, and Bolangir. 

Additionally, a yellow warning has been issued for several districts, including Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, where thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, warm nights, and hot, humid conditions are expected.

The weather pattern is expected to continue over the following days. Day 2 (25-26 May) sees similar orange alerts for thunderstorms in Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, and Ganjam, along with heatwaves in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, and Bolangir. Yellow alerts extend to districts like Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Angul, Rayagada, Koraput, and Puri, with expected thunderstorms and heatwave conditions. 

Day 3 to Day 5 (26-29 May) will continue to witness heatwave conditions in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, and Bolangir, while thunderstorms with gusty winds remain likely at isolated places in northern and southern Odisha.

 Day 6 and 7 (29-31 May) are expected to see isolated thunderstorms across the state, primarily in the northern, central, and southern districts, with wind speeds reaching up to 40-50 kmph, under a yellow alert.

Residents are advised to take precautions during heatwave hours between 1100-1500 IST, including staying hydrated, wearing light-colored cotton clothing, avoiding direct sunlight, and ensuring livestock safety. People in thunderstorm-prone areas are urged to stay indoors, avoid open fields and trees, secure loose structures, and unplug electronic appliances to minimize risks. Vigilance is particularly important in districts under orange alerts where strong winds may cause minor damage to crops, plantations, and vulnerable structures.
