Rath Yatra 2026: Construction of all chariots gathers pace, 42 wheels completed

Construction of the three chariots for the world-famous Rath Yatra gained momentum. All 42 wheels required for the annual festival was completed and work is progressing on other key structural components.
With the wheel-making phase completed, construction of the axles has now commenced. A total of 21 axles are required for the three chariots. Of these, three ceremonial axles meant for the Chaka Dera ritual was already completed earlier.
Work now begun on the remaining 18 axles for the three chariots as servitors continue preparations for the annual Rath Yatra.
A Maharana servitor said, “We are making efforts to complete the woodwork at the earliest. If there is rainfall in between, the work may get delayed slightly, but it will be completed within the stipulated time.”
Rituals Performed For Chariot Components
On Thursday, the Anukula Puja for the installation of 12 Chaupata Bhui Chauta bindings for each of the three chariots was performed by the Chief Maharana servitor.
Following the ritual, Maharana servitors and their associates continued the process of fixing four Pakhuda bindings on each Bhui Chauta, along with one Khambi binding on either side, as part of the ongoing construction work.
The activities marked another important stage in the assembly of the three chariots that will carry the sibling deities during the annual festival.
Decorative Carving Work Continues
Alongside the structural work, Rupakara servitors are continuing intricate carving and ornamental work on various chariot components.
Servitors are carving Singha Birala (lion-cat) motifs on the Sala Guja and Tikha Guja components of the three chariots. Polishing of completed carvings and the addition of ornamental details are also underway.
The Kona Guja components are also being modified with Singha Birala carvings to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the chariots.

Construction and decorative work are continuing simultaneously as preparations intensify for the annual Ghosa Yatra in Puri.
