From crores of unaccounted cash and luxury properties to gold ornaments, farmhouses, and hundreds of land plots, the scale of assets unearthed during recent anti-corruption operations has shocked both the public and investigating officials.
According to official Vigilance data, 36 engineers came under the scanner in 2025, while another 12 officers have already faced Vigilance action in 2026 so far. The repeated crackdowns have once again raised serious questions over how several officials allegedly accumulated massive wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.
Odisha Vigilance registered 205 criminal cases in 2025 alone and arrested 220 persons, including government officials as well as private individuals. Among those booked were 53 Class-I officers, including an IAS officer, along with engineers, forest officials, revenue officers, police personnel, doctors, excise officials and other government employees.
Authorities further revealed that 49 disproportionate assets cases were registered during the year, leading to the detection of assets worth nearly Rs 120.74 crore. During searches conducted at multiple locations, Vigilance officials recovered 153 buildings, 714 plots, 12 farmhouses, bank deposits worth Rs 36.69 crore, and cash amounting to Rs 8.81 crore. Officials also seized nearly 18.3 kilograms of gold ornaments during the raids.
Some of the most significant recoveries included Rs 2.56 crore in cash from Chief Engineer Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Rs 2.08 crore from watershed official Santanu Mohapatra, and Rs 1.43 crore from Deputy Ranger Rama Chandra Nepak. Another Rs 57 lakh was recovered from IAS officer Dhiman Chakma during Vigilance searches.
Officials said Odisha Vigilance carried out searches at 489 locations and froze 1,199 bank accounts allegedly linked to corrupt activities. Apart from disproportionate asset cases, the agency also registered 98 trap cases against officials accused of demanding and accepting bribes worth more than Rs 26 lakh.
On the prosecution front, Odisha Vigilance achieved a record disposal of 488 cases in 2025 and secured convictions in 108 cases. Following the conviction, 23 government employees were dismissed from service, while the pensions of 50 retired officials were withheld.
The growing number of Vigilance raids and the recovery of enormous illegal assets have intensified public concern over corruption within the administrative system. Observers believe stricter accountability, transparent governance mechanisms and continuous monitoring are essential to curb corruption and restore public confidence in government institutions.
