A youth was critically injured after allegedly being attacked by finance company employees near Udala College in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday. 

The incident reportedly took place after the victim and his brother demanded a receipt after clearing pending instalment payments for their motorcycle.

The injured youth has been identified as Ranjit Behera from the Nahara area under Khunta police station limits. He was admitted to Udala Medical by his brother following the alleged assault, and his condition is stated to be critical.

Dispute over Pending Instalments

According to reports, Ranjit Behera and his brother Sanjit Behera travelled to Udala on a motorcycle. While returning from a petrol pump towards Udala market, they were allegedly stopped near High School Chhak by finance company employees, who asked them to clear seven pending instalments.

As the amount could not be paid immediately, the finance employees allegedly took the motorcycle to their office. Later, the two brothers reached the Udala College ground, where the finance staff were present, and reportedly paid all the pending dues.

Alleged Assault after Receipt Demand

Ranjit Behera, the victim, said, “They were drunk and were consuming beer at the spot. There were around six to seven people. After we cleared all the pending payments, we asked for a receipt, but the finance employees refused to provide one. When I questioned them firmly, they hit me on the head with a beer bottle.” 

His brother Sanjit alleged that after making the payment, Ranjit had asked the finance employees for a receipt, but they refused to provide one. He said an altercation subsequently broke out between them, following which the group, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, attacked his brother and hit him on the head with a beer bottle.

No response from the finance company employees has been received regarding the incident.
