Marriage Scam in Gwalior: Bride’s husband performs ‘Kanyadaan’ posing as brother, groom learns truth from WhatsApp chats!

Cases of marriage fraud and identity deception are increasingly surfacing across India, leaving families emotionally and financially shattered. From fake identities to hidden marriages and organised cheating rackets, several such incidents have raised alarm in recent years.

In a shocking case from Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior, a newlywed man allegedly discovered that the person who performed the bride’s kanyadaan as her brother was actually her husband.

Groom’s Family Was Searching for a Bride

The case revolves around Ratan Sharma, a resident of Gwalior’s Naka Chandravadani locality, who works as a team leader in the emergency department of a private hospital in Jabalpur.

According to the complaint, all five brothers in the family were unmarried, and the family had been actively searching for a suitable match. The family alleged that their neighbour, Sonu Tiwari, introduced them to Sonu alias Ajay Chauhan from Morena. Chauhan reportedly claimed he was arranging a marriage for his financially weak foster sister, Radha alias Diksha Mudgal. After discussions and approval of the bride’s photograph, the marriage proposal was finalised.

Wedding Held With Full Hindu Rituals

Ratan Sharma travelled from Jabalpur to Gwalior to attend the wedding functions. The complaint states that on April 27, 2026, Sonu Chauhan attended a ceremony as the bride’s brother. The marriage was later solemnised on May 7 according to Hindu traditions. The groom’s family allegedly spent nearly Rs 7 lakh on the wedding arrangements.

During the ceremony, Maya Devi, introduced as the bride’s mother, performed the kanyadaan. Shilpi Parmar, Raghavendra Parmar and Satyendra Chauhan were also present as members of the bride’s family.

WhatsApp Chats Expose Alleged Truth

After the marriage, the bride shifted to her husband’s home in Gwalior. However, the family soon grew suspicious over her constant mobile phone conversations and chats.

According to the complaint, Ratan Sharma checked her phone one night and allegedly discovered WhatsApp conversations revealing that Sonu alias Ajay Chauhan — the man who had posed as her brother during the wedding — was actually her husband.

The complaint further alleged that Diksha and Sonu Chauhan had married in 2024 at an Arya Samaj temple in Agra and had been living together as husband and wife since then.

Police Register Case Against Seven Accused

Ratan Sharma alleged that the marriage was part of a larger conspiracy aimed at cheating the family and stealing cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees. After uncovering the alleged fraud, the family took the woman to the police station and lodged a complaint.
