Arunachal Pradesh’s Sonam Zomba scripts historic rise to become South Asia’s No.1 MMA Fighter

Mixed Martial Arts is no longer a fringe sport in India. Over the last few years, Indian fighters have steadily made their presence felt in global combat sports, with promotions like Matrix Fight Night (MFN) helping produce a new generation of athletes from regions often overlooked by mainstream sports.

From the Northeast to metropolitan cities, MMA is rapidly becoming one of the country’s fastest-growing sporting movements — and Arunachal Pradesh’s Sonam Zomba is now leading that rise.

The fighter from Tawang has officially emerged as South Asia’s top-ranked female MMA athlete, adding another milestone to her remarkable journey from a remote Himalayan village to the top of the cage fighting world.

From Four-Year Injury Break to Champion’s Glory

Sonam Zomba’s rise has not been easy. Injuries forced her away from professional competition for nearly four years, a setback that could have ended many careers. But after returning to the sport in 2022, she transformed herself into one of India’s most dominant strawweight fighters.

Known for her explosive aggression and technical precision, Zomba captured the Matrix Fight Night women’s strawweight championship and later defended the title successfully, becoming a two-time champion in the division.

Her recent title defense against Brazil’s Maristela Alves at MFN 18 in Greater Noida further strengthened her reputation. Zomba sealed victory with a clinical armbar submission, proving once again why she is currently regarded as South Asia’s best female MMA fighter.

Breaking Barriers for Arunachal and Beyond

Hailing from Jang village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district, Zomba has already etched her name into history as the state’s first professional MMA fighter. But her impact stretches far beyond titles and rankings.

At a time when women’s combat sports in India still face limited infrastructure and recognition, her journey has inspired countless young athletes across the Northeast to pursue MMA professionally.
