Berhampur couple assault case: 2 arrested, main accused on the run

Two persons were arrested in connection with the shocking assault incident that took place on Giri Road in Berhampur earlier this week. The accused, Raj Malhotra and Lingaraj Samal, were apprehended by Town Police following a detailed investigation into the viral attack video.

Police also seized two scooters, a stick allegedly used in the assault, and a mobile phone from the possession of the accused. However, the prime accused, Sandeep Sahu, is still absconding, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.

The disturbing incident unfolded on Monday in the heart of Berhampur city when a young couple was allegedly attacked in broad daylight by a group of men armed with bamboo sticks. The assault, which occurred in full public view on the busy Giri Road, created panic among commuters and passers-by.

A video of the incident, which quickly went viral on social media, showed the victims being repeatedly beaten while shocked onlookers watched helplessly. A few people were seen attempting to intervene as the attackers continued the assault, triggering outrage and raising serious concerns over public safety and law and order in the city.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may have stemmed from past enmity, though police are continuing to probe all possible angles. Residents have expressed shock over the brazen nature of the incident and demanded strict action against those involved.

The injured couple was immediately rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Doctors said both victims are currently stable and recovering. Meanwhile, Odisha Police officials have intensified the investigation by examining the viral footage, questioning witnesses, and conducting raids to nab the remaining accused. Authorities have assured that stringent action will be taken against everyone involved in the attack.
