Youth found dead in Odisha’s Titilagarh, police procedure comes under scrutiny

A suspicious death reported in Titilagarh of Bolangir district in Odisha on Monday triggered questions over the circumstances surrounding the incident as well as the manner in which police handled the case after recovering the victim.

The body of a youth, suspected to be a labourer, was recovered from Maharaja Sagar. Blood was reportedly seen coming from his nose, prompting questions regarding the cause of death. While police later stated that the youth had died, several aspects of the incident remain under scrutiny.

According to reports, the youth was recovered from Maharaja Sagar and taken away by police personnel. Authorities subsequently stated that he died after being taken to hospital.

Questions Raised Over Transportation Of Victim

The handling of the victim by police became a major point of discussion. Questions were raised over why the youth was allegedly transported in a police vehicle rather than an ambulance.

Residents and observers questioned whether the youth was still alive at the time of recovery. Emergency medical services should have been contacted immediately, particularly as the hospital is located nearby.

Sources said that under established procedures, if the body of an unidentified person is recovered, police are required to conduct seizure formalities in the presence of a magistrate. However, visuals from the scene reportedly showed Titilagarh Inspector-in-Charge Manoj Munda speaking on a phone while police personnel placed the body in a vehicle.

Investigation Underway

Work is currently underway at Maharaja Sagar under the Titilagarh Municipality. The incident led to speculation among some local residents about whether any aspect of the case is yet to come to light.

Sources indicated that it is being suspected the labourer may have died either after being hit by a JCB machine or due to sunstroke. However, the exact cause of death was not established at the time of reporting.

The post-mortem examination is expected to determine the precise cause and time of death.
