Eight families allege social boycott in Rayagada village over inter-caste marriages

Eight families from Padmapur village in Rayagada have alleged that they were socially ostracised by villagers for marrying outside their caste. The affected families submitted a complaint before the grievance cell of the district administration on Tuesday, seeking intervention and justice.
According to the complainants, the families have been barred from participating in social and community activities in the village after some members entered into inter-caste marriages. They alleged that villagers declared them outcasts and severed all social ties with them.
The families further claimed that local residents have been threatening others in the village with similar social boycott if they maintain any relationship or interaction with the ostracised families. Due to fear of facing similar consequences, many villagers have reportedly avoided speaking openly on the issue.
The complainants alleged that they have been prohibited from attending weddings, festivals and other social functions organised in the village. They said the practice has continued for years and that around 15 to 20 families in the village are facing similar social exclusion but are reluctant to come forward publicly out of fear.
The affected families have urged the district administration to treat the matter seriously and ensure protection of their rights. They have also demanded strict action against those allegedly enforcing the social boycott in the village.

“As we have done inter-caste marriage, we have ostracised. If our family or relatives try to maintain any relationship, they are also being threatened of similar boycott. We are under severe distress and lodged a complaint in this regard,” alleged Jayadeb Sahoo, a victim.
Officials are yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the allegations.
