Villagers in Mayurbhanj district’s Udala witnessed a unique centuries-old Santala ritual on Sunday, celebrating the return of families to their original faith. This ritual, deeply rooted in tribal customs, symbolizes a spiritual rebirth, highlighting the strong connections between community, tradition, and spirituality.

According to sources, five years ago, the Lembu Hansda family of Dungurudiha village in Khunta block had converted to another religion. Their return to their ancestral faith necessitated this symbolic ritual of rebirth.

As per the ritual, a pit was carefully dug in the floor of their home. The ritual involves families crawling out of the pit dug inside their home, symbolizing their ‘new birth’. 

Emerging from it means the family symbolically severs their umbilical cords, marking a spiritual rebirth. Villagers guide the family into the house, observing the process with reverence, reinforcing the communal nature of the ritual.

Sacred Rituals and Community Celebration

“We went there because of illness, mainly fever. The illness has now subsided. After that, we emerged, reconnecting with Sanatan Dharma. We went to be free from sickness and sorrow. This was offered freely, without expecting anything in return,” said Lembu Hansda, reflecting on the significance of the ritual.

Following the emergence, traditional ceremonies were performed, and sacred substances were sprinkled on the family to complete their spiritual reconversion. The occasion concluded with a grand feast, celebrating their return and strengthening community bonds.

The Mayurbhanj practice exemplifies how indigenous communities honor their heritage through symbolic rites, emphasizing that faith is not merely personal but a shared cultural journey. Through these vivid rituals, tribal communities continue to preserve their cultural identity while fostering unity, spirituality, and a sense of belonging.
