Red warning for Heatwave in western Odisha; orange alert for thunderstorms, gusty winds in other districts

Odisha is set to witness a sharp contrast in weather conditions over the next seven days, with intense heatwave conditions continuing across western districts even as thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected in several coastal and northern regions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple Red, Orange and Yellow warnings for different parts of the state till June 1, urging residents to remain alert amid the dual threat of extreme heat and unstable weather.
Red Warning: Severe Heatwave Grip Over Western Odisha
The highest level “Take Action” Red Warning has been issued for Sambalpur and Bolangir districts for the next three days due to the likelihood of simultaneous heatwave and warm night conditions. Such conditions significantly increase health risks as temperatures remain high even during nighttime, offering little relief.
Boudh district has also been placed under Red Warning for heatwave conditions till May 28.
The prolonged heat stress is expected to particularly impact infants, elderly persons, pregnant women and people with existing illnesses. Authorities have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours and stay hydrated.
Orange Alert: Thunderstorm Threat in Northern Odisha
An Orange Alert has been issued for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts on May 26 due to the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph.
The alert indicates potential damage to weak structures, uprooting of trees and localised disruptions.
At the same time, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Nuapada and Kalahandi districts are likely to continue experiencing heatwave conditions under Orange Alert for the next several days.
By May 29 and 30, thunderstorm activity is expected to intensify further across interior Odisha, with gusty winds likely over Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal and adjoining districts.
Yellow Warning: Lightning, Humidity And Localised Rain
A widespread Yellow Warning has been sounded for many coastal and southern districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput and Malkangiri.
These areas are likely to witness:
Thunderstorms with lightning
Gusty winds between 30-50 kmph
Hot and humid weather conditions
Isolated rainfall activity during afternoon and evening hours
The coastal belt is expected to remain uncomfortable due to high humidity levels despite intermittent rainfall activity.
Rainfall To Expand By End Of Week
From May 29 onward, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are likely at several places across Odisha instead of isolated pockets. Weather experts indicate that pre-monsoon activity is gradually strengthening over the state, which may bring temporary relief from extreme temperatures in some regions.
However, western Odisha is likely to continue battling severe heatwave conditions for at least the next four to five days.
