EPFO 3.0: Instant PF withdrawal through UPI and ATM, know key changes

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is preparing to roll out a major digital upgrade that could allow subscribers to withdraw provident fund (PF) money instantly through UPI-linked systems, eliminating lengthy processing delays and employer approvals.

Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently said the testing phase of the new facility has been completed and the EPF amount withdrawn by members will be transferred directly into their bank accounts through the UPI payment gateway.

The initiative is part of the proposed ‘EPFO 3.0’ system aimed at improving service delivery for over seven crore EPFO members across the country. The organisation is currently working on resolving software-related glitches before the full-scale launch.

How the Current EPFO Withdrawal System Works

At present, EPFO subscribers must follow a lengthy process to access their PF savings:

  • Submit withdrawal claims online or at EPFO offices using Form 31
  • Wait for KYC verification
  • Obtain employer approval
  • Face additional delays in case of document mismatch or change of employer
  • Wait around 7 to 10 days for claim settlement
  • Manual verification required for withdrawals above Rs 1 lakh
  • Re-submit documents if discrepancies are found

Key Changes Under EPFO 3.0

The proposed upgraded system is expected to simplify and speed up PF withdrawals significantly:

  • Members can check withdrawable EPF balance on the UMANG platform
  • QR-code based transfer facility to directly move EPF money to linked bank accounts
  • Instant transfer of PF money without employer intervention
  • Funds can be used immediately for payments or ATM withdrawals
  • UPI-enabled ATM access for PF withdrawals
  • Auto-settlement limit increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh
  • Reduced paperwork and faster claim processing

Under the proposed system:

  • Members can start conversations by sending “Hello” to EPFO’s verified WhatsApp number
  • Users can receive EPFO updates and alerts on registered mobile numbers
  • The service aims to provide quicker access to EPFO-related information and assistance
  • Officials said the move is intended to make EPFO services more user-friendly and accessible through widely used digital platforms.
