Odisha mangoes sent to Germany as Amrapali variety gains global demand

The famous Amrapali mangoes of Odisha’s Dhenkanal district have once again made their way to international markets, this time reaching Germany after earlier successful exports to London and other parts of the United Kingdom, sources said on Friday.

Around two tonnes of mangoes have been shipped to the European nation, allowing its consumers to taste the sweet and juicy flavour of Dhenkanal’s premium mango variety. The export initiative has brought fresh hope and higher earnings for local farmers, who are now receiving significantly better prices for their produce in international markets.
While farmers usually sell Amrapali mangoes in local markets at around Rs 25 per kilogram, the same mangoes are being exported at prices ranging between Rs 50 and Rs 60 per kilogram.
In the last 15 days alone, nearly 20 tonnes of mangoes have already been exported to the UK and Germany. Export agencies and farmer-producer groups have now set an ambitious target of exporting over 200 tonnes of mangoes this season.
A key role in this export drive is being played by an agro producer’s firm, which is collecting mangoes directly from farmers across different parts of the district. After collection, the mangoes are brought to a specialised pack house where they are cleaned using organic liquid solutions, graded carefully, sorted, and packed in special trays before export.
The process has also created employment opportunities for women, particularly from the Juang tribal community. Around 20 trained women workers are involved in grading, sorting, cleaning, and packaging activities. Many of them said the work is helping them earn a stable income and support their families.
Dhenkanal has earned a distinct identity for producing flavourful and high-quality mangoes due to its favourable climate and soil conditions. Agricultural experts believe the district’s weather is highly suitable for premium mango cultivation, especially the Amrapali variety.
Last year, nearly 58 tonnes of mangoes were exported from Dhenkanal district. This year, exporters are aiming for more than three times that quantity. Orders have already been received from international destinations such as Italy, Birmingham, Rome, and Dubai.
Apart from the foreign markets, Dhenkanal mangoes are also witnessing strong demand in several Indian states, including West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Chennai, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. With rising appreciation for their taste and quality, the popularity of Dhenkanal mangoes continues to grow both in India and abroad.
“When we sell the Amrapali mangoes for Rs 20 to Rs 30 in the local market, if we send the fruits outside, we get Rs 50 and above. As of today, we have already exported 25 tons of mangoes. First it went to Dubai, then to the UK, and then to London,” local mango farmer, Badal Sahu, expressed with a gleam in his eyes.
