The opening partnership of Rajasthan Royals has taken an unexpected turn in IPL 2026. While many anticipated senior batter and established India Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to dominate the season, it has been teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who has stolen the spotlight. The 15-year-old has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers, leaving fans and experts impressed with his fearless approach.

Sooryavanshi has piled up 583 runs in 14 matches, significantly ahead of Jaiswal’s 397 runs from the same number of games. The contrast in their performances has become a major talking point, especially considering Jaiswal’s reputation and expectations surrounding him.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the young opener’s extraordinary rise may have indirectly affected Jaiswal’s game. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin admitted he expected far greater returns from Jaiswal this season and suggested that the teenager’s explosive batting could have had a psychological impact.

Ashwin observed that Jaiswal’s campaign has felt below expectations compared to his previous IPL seasons. According to him, Sooryavanshi’s aggressive style and consistent success may have created additional pressure, potentially unsettling Jaiswal and affecting his natural rhythm at the crease.

Drawing a parallel from Indian cricket history, Ashwin recalled the Test opening combination of Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra in the early 2000s. He pointed out that despite Chopra’s valuable contributions, Sehwag’s attacking style often overshadowed his efforts. Ashwin believes a similar situation may be unfolding in Rajasthan Royals, where Sooryavanshi’s high-impact batting has grabbed attention and shifted the spotlight away from Jaiswal.

He further suggested that in trying to match the youngster’s intensity, Jaiswal may have altered his approach and attempted to play more aggressively than usual, leading to dismissals in crucial situations.
