Punjab suspends untimely Rath Yatra after Puri Jagannath Temple’s intervention

The proposed untimely Rath Yatra in Punjab’s Ferozepur has been postponed following objections raised by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration in Puri. The decision was announced by the Ferozepur district administration on Wednesday after discussions with the local Jagannath Temple authorities and temple committee members.
According to official sources, the Jagannath Temple Committee in Ferozepur Cantonment agreed to defer the Rath Yatra that was earlier planned for May 23. Instead, the organisers have decided to hold the festival on the officially designated date of July 16, in accordance with traditional Jagannath rituals and customs. The Ferozepur District Collector has also written to the Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, informing him about the postponement and the revised schedule.
The controversy began after promotional posts regarding the proposed Rath Yatra circulated widely on social media. The announcements triggered concern among devotees and temple authorities in Odisha, who objected to the observance of the festival on a non-traditional date.
Shree Jagannath Temple Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee had written to the Ferozepur district administration requesting immediate intervention to stop the event. He stated that Rath Yatra is a sacred festival that should be observed strictly according to prescribed religious traditions and temple customs.
