Odisha’s urban transport landscape is set for a major transformation as the state government announced the renaming of the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) to Comprehensive Region Urban Transport (CRUT). The move, confirmed by Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra, signals a broader vision to modernize and expand public transportation across the state.

Under the revamped plan, the government’s flagship Ama Bus service will operate in key towns including Baripada, Angul, Jharsuguda, and Balasore, ensuring greater connectivity for residents. Notably, the Minister of Urban Development highlighted that the entire Ama bus fleet will be electric, reflecting Odisha’s commitment to green and sustainable urban mobility.

The state’s major cities are also set to benefit significantly. Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Rourkela will each receive 100 electric buses, enhancing intra-city travel and reducing dependence on conventional fuel-based vehicles. Similarly, Sambalpur and Berhampur will see 100 EV buses deployed, further strengthening public transport infrastructure in these regions.

The introduction of these electric buses will not only improve commuting efficiency but also contribute to the state’s environmental goals by lowering carbon emissions.

The move is expected to encourage more citizens to adopt public transport, easing traffic congestion and supporting Odisha’s urban development agenda.

With this expansion, it will set an example for sustainable urban transport planning while ensuring accessible, eco-friendly travel options for all citizens.
