Odisha govt ensures uninterrupted medicine supply during AIOCD’s May 20 bandh

In view of the proposed nationwide bandh call by the All-India Organization of Chemists and Druggists’ (AIOCD) on May 20, 2026, the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Odisha has made comprehensive arrangements to ensure uninterrupted access to emergency and life-saving medicines across the State.

According to information released by the Odisha Information & Public Relations (I&PR) Department, several measures have been put in place to prevent disruption in the supply and dispensing of essential medicines during the bandh.

As part of the arrangements, all Niramaya Centres functioning in Government Health Institutions will dispense medicines to patients under the supervision of CDM & PHOs.

Medicine stores located inside hospital campuses will also remain open during the bandh period.

The Department further informed that all Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) across the State will function normally.

In addition, all in-house pharmacies and 24×7 medicine stores attached to hospitals and clinical establishments have been directed to remain operational.

Corporate-run chemist shops that are not associated with the AIOCD are also expected to operate as usual, ensuring continued access to medicines for the public.

To maintain adequate availability of drugs, Drugs Inspectors and Assistant Drugs Controllers have been instructed to closely monitor the supply and availability of essential medicines throughout the State.

Officials have also been asked to coordinate with wholesalers and distributors to ensure sufficient advance stocking of medicines.

The Department stated that local chemist associations have been requested to facilitate uninterrupted dispensing of medicines, particularly during medical emergencies.

Special emphasis has been laid on the needs of patients suffering from chronic illnesses.

Chemists operating in remote areas have been advised to ensure advance dispensing of medicines for patients with diabetes, hypertension, asthma, cardiac ailments, epilepsy, cancer and other serious diseases.

The State government has urged citizens not to panic and assured that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure uninterrupted healthcare support during the bandh.
