Will Punjab’s rising talent Gurnoor Brar shine in his Test debut against Afghanistan?

Punjab’s fast-bowling sensation Gurnoor Brar has been rewarded for his perseverance and talent with a maiden call-up to India’s Test squad for the one-off match against Afghanistan in Mullanpur next month. With Jasprit Bumrah rested, selectors led by Ajit Agarkar have chosen to test fresh talent, bringing Brar into a pace attack that also features Manav Suthar, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj.

Brar’s journey to the top has been unconventional. Hailing from Sri Muktsar Sahib, the 6-foot-5 pacer initially played football and tennis before switching to cricket at 16. Inspired by South African legend Dale Steyn, he quickly honed his fast-bowling skills, using his height to extract bounce and trouble batters with awkward angles.

Mentorship and IPL Exposure

Brar first caught the eye of India captain Shubman Gill during their Under-19 days. Gill’s early support helped Brar break into the district team and navigate Punjab’s cricketing pathways. His performances as a net bowler for Punjab Kings impressed senior players, including Shikhar Dhawan, earning him an IPL debut.

A serious disc fracture in 2023-24 temporarily stalled his progress, but with Gill’s guidance, Brar joined Gujarat Titans as a net bowler and gradually rebuilt his career under coach Ashish Nehra. The Titans signed him for Rs 30 lakh in 2025 and retained him for 2026, reflecting confidence in his potential.

Domestic Success and International Promise

In domestic cricket, Brar has excelled in the longer format, claiming over 30 wickets in just more than a dozen first-class matches at an average of 18, including a standout 5 for 14. He has also contributed valuable lower-order runs, such as a fighting 64, proving his all-round value. While his white-ball game is still developing, his red-ball consistency has firmly established him as a promising pacer on the brink of international cricket.

A Talent Ready for the Big Stage

From a late starter to a nationally recognized fast bowler, Gurnoor Brar’s rise exemplifies determination, mentorship, and skill. With his Test debut on the horizon, India fans have a new pace sensation to watch closely.
