Odisha to introduce electric boats, replacing diesel vessels at key tourist destinations

Odisha is set to take a major step toward sustainable tourism by replacing traditional diesel boats with electric boats at key locations across the state.

The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) on Thursday officially began the process, aiming to reduce pollution and enhance the experience for visitors. The initiative is in line with the state’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices while boosting tourism infrastructure.

First Phase of EV Boats

Tenders have been invited for the deployment of electric boats at Kolab, Hirakud, Bhitarkanika, and Barkul. In the first phase, five locations will receive EV boats, allowing tourists to enjoy serene water experiences without the noise and pollution caused by diesel engines.

Officials believe that the move will not only benefit the environment but also attract more environmentally conscious travelers. The EV boats are expected to provide smoother rides, lower operational costs, and reduced carbon emissions.

Authorities have emphasized that this is just the beginning of a larger plan to gradually transition all tourist watercraft in the state to electric models.

The initiative is expected to set a benchmark for other states and demonstrate Odisha’s commitment to combining tourism development with environmental sustainability.

Locals and tourists alike are eagerly anticipating the arrival of these electric boats, which promise a cleaner and greener boating experience.
