Mother-son allege third-degree torture inside Talchua Marine Police Station in Kendrapara

Serious allegations of custodial assault and police excess have surfaced against officials of the Talchua Marine Police Station after a woman and her son accused police personnel of subjecting them to third-degree torture inside the police station premises.

The complainants, identified as Annapurna Mandal and her son Anant Mandal, alleged that they were physically assaulted and verbally abused after being summoned to the police station in connection with a family dispute.

Mother-Son Claim They Were Detained for Hours

According to reports, Annapurna Mandal and her son were called to the police station following a complaint lodged by Annapurna’s husband regarding a domestic dispute.

The duo alleged that woman constable Sandhyarani Jena summoned them to the station and detained them from around 4 PM until midnight on Tuesday.

The complainants further alleged that they were abused using inappropriate language and assaulted by police personnel during their stay at the station.

Woman Alleges Assault in Front of Son

Annapurna Mandal made serious allegations against the police personnel, claiming that she was beaten with lathis inside the police station.

“They beat me with lathis. They asked me why I was not listening to my father-in-law and husband and continuously assaulted me,” she alleged.

She also claimed that she was assaulted in a half-naked condition in front of her son inside the police station premises.

Son Alleges Assault Inside Toilet

Anant Mandal also accused police personnel of physical assault.

“Due to family disturbance, police summoned us and took us inside a toilet where one Havildar and one woman IIC official assaulted me and my mother,” he alleged.

The allegations have triggered concern locally, with questions being raised over the conduct of police personnel and the treatment of individuals brought to police stations for family dispute-related matters.

Police Official Denies Allegations

Responding to the accusations, police official Sandhyarani Jena denied all allegations of custodial torture and assault.

“I had given them four hours to resolve their family dispute. CCTV footage can also be checked,” she stated.
