Govt eases rules for LPG consumers; users to get 30-day window to switch to PNG

In a major relief for domestic cooking gas consumers, the Government of India amended the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order, 2026, to make the transition between LPG and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) services more convenient and consumer-friendly, official sources said on Monday.

The amended order, notified on May 25, 2026, introduces greater flexibility for consumers who obtain PNG connections after already having LPG connections. Under the revised rules, LPG consumers who shift to PNG services will now get a 30-day window to either surrender their LPG connection or secure a transfer voucher for future restoration of the connection if they move back to an area without PNG infrastructure.

According to the new provision, consumers opting for PNG can apply for termination of their LPG connection within 30 days of obtaining the new gas service. Alternatively, they can choose to keep the option open for future LPG restoration through a transfer voucher mechanism.

The Central government said the amendment was necessary because many consumers face practical difficulties when relocating from urban areas with PNG facilities to towns or rural regions where PNG networks are unavailable. The revised rules are expected to especially help tenants, migrant labourers, students, transferable employees, and families frequently changing residences.

Officials believe the move will reduce procedural hassles and provide uninterrupted access to cooking fuel for households moving between different regions. The amendment is also aimed at ensuring smoother coordination between LPG distributors and PNG service providers while improving convenience for consumers.

The decision comes amid the Central government’s broader push to expand clean cooking fuel access across the country through both LPG and PNG networks.
