Rajya Sabha MP Debashish Samantaray quits BJD, cites feeling ‘systematically belittled’ in resignation letter

In a significant political development in Odisha, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Rajya Sabha MP Debashish Samantaray resigned from the party’s primary membership on Monday. He stated that he felt he was “systematically belittled” and that the party no longer required his services.

In his resignation letter addressed to BJD president Naveen Patnaik, Samantaray expressed gratitude for being nominated to the Rajya Sabha and for the opportunity to serve the people of the undivided Cuttack district and raise Odisha-related issues at the national level.

“I shall always be indebted to you for nominating me to Rajya Sabha. I take this opportunity to express my sincere and deepest gratitude to you for giving me an opportunity to serve the people of the undivided Cuttack district and to raise issues of Odisha at large at the national level,” he wrote.

He further stated, “I have always dedicated myself to the interest of the party and have, over the years, worked for the party with utmost conviction and commitment. However, I feel that, of late, I have been systematically belittled in the party and that the party does not require my services. Therefore, I have taken this hard decision in the public interest and request you to accept my resignation.”

Possible Reasons Behind The Exit

While Samantaray did not elaborate on the specific reasons behind his decision, political circles discussed several factors that may have contributed to his reported dissatisfaction within the party.

Among the issues being cited are the BJD’s stand on the Waqf Bill, concerns over the growing influence of V.K. Pandian within the organisation, and Samantaray’s alleged inability to secure meetings with Naveen Patnaik despite repeated requests.

Other factors being discussed include concerns raised regarding individuals allegedly creating indiscipline within the party, demands for greater opportunities for young and second-generation leaders, and the nomination of Santrupt Misra to the Rajya Sabha.

There is also speculation that Samantaray was unhappy over the appointment of Manas Mangaraj as leader of the BJD parliamentary party in the Rajya Sabha despite Samantaray being among the senior leaders in the Upper House.

No Detailed Explanation From Samantaray

Although these factors are being discussed as possible reasons behind his estrangement from the BJD, Samantaray did not publicly comment on any of them. No reaction from the Rajya Sabha MP regarding these issues could be obtained at the time of reporting.

His resignation marks a notable setback for the BJD and comes amid growing political speculation over his future course of action.
