Demand for Rs 1 lakh! Another newlywed woman found hanging in Odisha

In a tragic incident, another alleged case of dowry-related death has surfaced in Odisha, where a newlywed woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances. The deceased woman’s family has accused her in-laws of killing her over continuous dowry demands.
The victim has been identified as Barsharani Das of Tipara village under Jajpur district. She had married Bibek Das of Rausapatna in Cuttack. According to the allegations made by her family members, substantial dowry, including cash and gold ornaments, had been given at the time of marriage.
However, Barsharani’s family alleged that after the marriage, she was subjected to continuous harassment and mental torture by her husband and in-laws for additional dowry. They claimed that her husband and family members repeatedly demanded more money and allegedly tortured her over the issue.
As per the complaint, Barsharani’s husband had taken Rs 1 lakh from her parental family in April this year. Despite that, the alleged harassment reportedly continued.
On Saturday, Barsharani’s hanging body was recovered from her in-laws’ house, triggering shock and outrage among her family members. Suspecting foul play, her parents lodged a complaint at Purighat Police Station, accusing her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law of murder.
Following the complaint, police launched an investigation into the matter and have detained Barsharani’s husband, Bibek Das, for questioning. However, no official statement has yet been issued by the police or the accused persons regarding the allegations.

“My daughter’s in-laws used to physically assault her while demanding additional dowry. They have allegedly killed my daughter over dowry demands,” said deceased’s mother Urmila Sahu.
