In a shocking incident highlighting persistent gender bias in society, a couple was allegedly assaulted by family members after the birth of twin baby girls in Odisha’s Cuttack district. The incident has been reported from Pasulunda village under Mahanga police limits.

According to reports, the victims have been identified as Chandrasekhar Jena and his wife Parbati Jena. Allegations suggest that members of the woman’s in-laws’ family physically assaulted the couple following the birth of their twin daughters.

Sources said the family members had reportedly been expecting a male child. However, around a month ago, Parbati gave birth to twin baby girls. Following the birth, the in-laws allegedly expressed dissatisfaction and repeatedly blamed the couple for not having a son.

The situation reportedly escalated to violence, with the couple accusing the family members of mercilessly assaulting them over the issue. An official complaint in this regard has been lodged at Mahanga police station.

After the alleged attack, Chandrasekhar and Parbati are currently staying at the woman’s parental home along with their newborn twin daughters. Police have initiated an investigation into the matter and are examining the allegations.

The incident has once again raised concerns over deep-rooted social discrimination and the continuing preference for male children in certain sections of society.
