A routine ride through a forest highway in Uttarakhand took a dramatic turn when a woman riding a scooter collided with an elephant crossing the road in the Chakarpur region. The unusual accident left the rider injured and reportedly caused one of the elephant’s tusks to snap into three pieces.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, May 19, along the forest stretch between Banbasa and Chakarpur — a route known to forest authorities as a busy elephant corridor where herds frequently move across the national highway.

Teacher Was Headed to School After Visiting Family

According to reports, 23-year-old Nikita Kapri, a resident of Shripur Vichhwa and a teacher by profession, was travelling from Tanakpur to Khatima on her scooter after visiting her maternal home. She was reportedly on her way to teach at Hind Public School when an elephant suddenly emerged from the dense forest onto the highway.

Officials stated that the scooter rammed directly into the animal while it was attempting to cross the road.

Collision Damages Scooter, Elephant’s Tusk Breaks

The impact of the crash badly damaged the scooter and led to one of the elephant’s tusks breaking apart and falling onto the road. Despite the shocking collision, the woman reportedly managed to move herself away from the immediate danger zone.

Several teachers and local commuters passing through the area witnessed the incident and quickly raised an alarm. Their intervention reportedly forced the elephant to retreat back into the forest.

Police, Forest Officials Rush to the Spot

Following information about the incident, teams from the local police and forest department reached the area. The injured woman was shifted to a private hospital in an ambulance, where doctors began her treatment.

Officials later confirmed that her condition remained stable. Meanwhile, forest personnel collected the broken tusk fragments from the road and secured them at the range office.

Trap Cameras Installed in Elephant Corridor

Harendra Singh Bisht confirmed that the forest department has intensified monitoring efforts in the area after the incident.

“The elephant’s tusk, broken by a scooter collision, has been seized and safely stored in the range office. The site is an elephant corridor area, where herds of elephants cross the national highway daily. On Tuesday, an elephant also collided with a scooter while crossing the road,” Bisht said.

Authorities are now stepping up surveillance to avoid similar incidents in the future.

“Two trap cameras are being installed in the area around the incident site to monitor elephants and other wildlife. Two-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers traveling on the national highway, day and night, should exercise special caution,” Bisht said.
