Bollywood’s biggest sci-fi gamble? Akshay Kumar enters uncharted territory with India’s first alien-thriller Samuk!

For decades, Indian cinema has flirted with extraterrestrial stories — sometimes through fantasy, sometimes through comedy, and often with emotional undertones. From mysterious beings arriving on Earth to tales inspired by life beyond the galaxies, filmmakers have repeatedly explored humanity’s fascination with aliens in their own imaginative style. But now, Bollywood appears ready to enter darker territory.

Akshay Kumar is preparing to headline what is being described as India’s first full-fledged alien-thriller, a film titled Samuk. Unlike earlier space-themed entertainers, this project aims to blend large-scale sci-fi horror with intense action and creature-driven suspense.

At a time when AI-generated filmmaking tools are becoming increasingly common, Samuk is reportedly taking a radically different path — relying heavily on practical effects, real stunt work, and handcrafted creature design to create its terrifying extraterrestrial world.

According to reports exclusively accessed by HT City, Samuk will be directed by Kanishk Varma and produced by Akshay Kumar alongside Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Ashin Shah. The film also marks the reunion of Akshay and Vipul after more than a decade.

The makers have reportedly brought in major international talent to shape the film’s action and creature-heavy world, signaling ambitions that stretch far beyond conventional Bollywood sci-fi.

Hollywood Action Expertise Joins Samuk

One of the most prominent international collaborators attached to the project is Hollywood stunt coordinator Luke Tumber, a former Royal Marines Commando known for his work on films like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Venom, No Time to Die and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Speaking about the project, Tumber said, “This project represents an exciting fusion of international stunt expertise, visionary filmmaking, and authentic action cinema, and I’m proud to be part of bringing that vision to life. Together, we aim to deliver a film that combines powerful storytelling with cutting-edge live-action sequences that will resonate with audiences internationally.”

The stunt expert also showered praise on Akshay Kumar, referring to him as “widely recognised as the Action Hero of India”.

The Monster Behind the Madness

While the action scale is expected to be massive, the real talking point of Samuk could be its alien creature itself. The film’s extraterrestrial design is being led by Academy Award-nominated creature-effects veteran Alec Gillis, whose work includes projects from the Alien and Predator franchises, along with Smile 2 and Tremors. Gillis revealed that the film will rely heavily on practical creature effects rather than CGI-heavy visual creation.

“Together Kanishk and I designed the title character, which is truly a unique alien horror. In an era of CGI and Al. it is gratifying that directors and audiences still value handcrafted, human-made traditional monsters,” he said.

Talking about Akshay Kumar’s screen presence, Gillis added, “He has the physicality of Jason Statham and the likeability of Tom Cruise! My goal is to create an alien nemesis in Samuk whose energy and screen charisma equal Mr Kumar’s. Defeating this new classic movie monster will not be an easy task, even for him”

Akshay Kumar Calls the Genre “Totally New”

When contacted by HT City, Akshay Kumar confirmed his involvement in the project and expressed excitement about entering unexplored territory. “Yes, I’ve signed this film. I found the script and subject of Samuk fascinating. Sci-fi alien thriller is a totally new genre for me and also for our films. I am very excited about it,” he said.

A Rare Indian Attempt at Alien Horror

With internationally acclaimed stunt and creature specialists onboard, Samuk is shaping up as one of the most ambitious Indian sci-fi thrillers in recent years. Instead of depending entirely on digital spectacle, the film appears focused on immersive action, practical monster effects, and atmospheric horror — a combination rarely attempted in mainstream Indian cinema.

If executed successfully, Samuk could open an entirely new chapter for Bollywood’s science-fiction storytelling.
