Heatwave conditions to persist across Odisha; IMD issues orange warning for three districts

Odisha is set to witness another day of intense summer conditions. India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted continued heatwave conditions in parts of western Odisha and high humidity levels along the coast on Sunday.

The prevailing weather pattern is expected to continue until May 27, while thunderstorm activity was also forecasted for the afternoon hours in several areas.

Orange Warning For Western Odisha

The IMD issued an Orange Warning for heatwave conditions in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Bolangir districts. In addition, 13 districts have been placed under a Yellow Warning for hot and humid weather.

The advisory comes as western Odisha continues to experience exceptionally high temperatures. On Saturday, five towns in the region recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. Jharsuguda emerged as the hottest location in the state, registering a maximum temperature of 45.2 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists indicated that the combination of high daytime temperature and elevated humidity levels is likely to keep weather conditions uncomfortable across several parts of the state.

Humid Conditions Along The Coast

While western districts are facing heatwave conditions, coastal Odisha continues to experience oppressive humidity. The increased moisture content in the atmosphere contributed to discomfort even during night-time hours, with residents reporting little relief after sunset.

The weather department noted that hot and humid conditions are expected to persist across coastal districts alongside the elevated temperatures prevailing elsewhere in the state.

Thunderstorm Activity Likely

The IMD also issued an alert for Kalbaisakhi thunderstorms and rainfall during the afternoon period. Such pre-monsoon activity may bring temporary relief in some areas, although temperature is expected to remain high across much of the state.

Monsoon Advances Further

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon continues its gradual advance. According to meteorological updates, the monsoon progressed further into the southwest, southeast and east-central Bay of Bengal.
