‘Operation Prahar’ returns: Commissionerate Police launch fresh drive against illegal intoxicant trade

After a brief lull, the Commissionerate Police, in coordination with the Drugs Department, once again launched ‘Operation Prahar’ to crack down on the illegal sale of addictive and narcotic substances in Bhubaneswar. As part of the renewed drive, officials carried out surprise raids on shops allegedly involved in the sale of cigarettes, cannabis, gutkha, and other prohibited intoxicants.

The enforcement drive was conducted on Friday in several shops along the Gandamunda Road area of the city. During the sudden inspections, authorities checked establishments suspected of violating existing regulations related to the sale of banned substances.

Officials imposed fines exceeding Rs 5,000 on shopkeepers found engaged in illegal sales activities. The crackdown is part of a broader effort to strengthen surveillance and curb the availability of intoxicating products, particularly in areas near educational institutions.

Authorities reiterated that strict restrictions remain in force on the sale of tobacco and other addictive substances within a 500-metre radius of schools and educational institutions across Bhubaneswar. Under the rules, pan shops, stationery stores, and similar establishments operating within the restricted zone are prohibited from selling such products.

“Our enforcement drive is underway. We are conducting raids on shops involved in the sale of cigarettes and gutkhas. District enforcement squad comprising of Commissionerate Police, Drugs, Excise and Health Departments are conducting joint raids. We are continuously conducting enforcement and awareness activities. Strict restrictions remain in force on the sale of tobacco and other addictive substances within a 500-metre radius of schools and educational institutions. during the crackdown, we have imposed fines exceeding Rs 5,000 on shopkeepers found engaging in illegal sales activities,” said Drugs Inspector Chandan Giri.
