Rath Yatra 2026: Chariot construction work enters second phase as axle work gathers pace

Construction of the three chariots for the annual Rath Yatra entered its second phase, with axle-making work progressing at the Ratha Khala after the completion of wheel construction for all three chariots.

The traditional chariot yard remains busy as Maharana servitors continue work on various structural components required for the construction of the chariots ahead of the world-famous festival.

Wheel Construction Completed

The construction of all wheels for the three chariots was completed. In addition, the stacking of timber at the outer Ratha Khala for the construction of the Pancha Danda Chaupata was also finished.

With the first phase of construction now complete, attention shifted to the preparation of the axles (Akha), marking the beginning of the second phase of the chariot-building process.

Pancha Danda Work To Follow

After the axle construction is completed, work on the Pancha Danda structure of the three chariots will commence.

As part of the third phase of construction, the wheels and axles will first be assembled and aligned in the prescribed direction. The Pancha Danda framework will then be mounted on the wheel-and-axle assembly in accordance with traditional procedures.

Maharana servitors are currently engaged in the construction of the Nahaka, Padi Nahaka, Bada Uchhula and Sana Uchhula axles for the three chariots.

Work On Taladhwaja Component Begins

Meanwhile, work on the Chirata of the Pola Gayala component of the Taladhwaja chariot is scheduled to begin on Friday.

The ongoing construction activities at the Ratha Khala are being carried out in phases under the traditional chariot-building process. Servitors are working on multiple components simultaneously to ensure timely completion of the three chariots for the forthcoming Rath Yatra.
